Playing Hooky

Hook Norton Old Hooky (4.6%).  I love the motto of the brewery, printed on the bottle label – “where progress is measured in pints”.  I’m not sure what it means, but I like it.  The bottle notes describe this as “a fruity and full-bodied ale”, and it is certainly very fruity, aromatic and quite sweet – there is some bitterness there, but it is overpowered by the sweetness – to be honest, a bit sweet for me; I don’t think I could drink a lot of this beer – maybe one at the end of an evening to finish off with.

The bottle notes suggest this beer as an accompaniment to meat dishes.  That sounds about right for a meat dish that has a fruity element to it – maybe pork with apple sauce, or even turkey with cranberry sauce.  Personally I think it would go better with a pudding.

Apparently part of the brewery is still powered by a steam engine, and some of the local beer deliveries are done using a dray pulled by shire horses.  There are lots of details on the excellent Hook Norton website.
